🏳️🌈HAPPY PRIDE MONTH🏳️🌈
May you be safe in all of your celebrations. May you get into something gay and kinky (if thats your jam). May the troubles you are facing fuck off. And may positive and enlightening opportunities come your way.
This particular chapter opened up with Love Island UK which I don’t have much knowledge of. I’m just now realizing that there are different versions: UK and US. I do know about Olandria though! She is absolutely beautiful and I enjoy seeing her constantly win. While I do not keep up with the show or participants, the racism that some contestants have displayed surely crosses my timeline.
This is one that I may need to come back to. I found answering these questions a little hard and I’m not sure why. I think it’s because I’m working through some personal desirability and attraction stuff right now.
Fuck it, let’s do it.
How do desirability politics show up in your friendships, family, life, and organizing spaces?
Desirability politics show up in friendships and family life when we start talking about ways to “fix” our body. Whether this be through dieting or plastic surgery, it begs the question of why? Who is this for? Questions I have surely asked myself. A question I asked myself in feeling a need to erase my stretch marks. Or at least trying to find ways to erase my stretch marks. Can’t erase em, skin has just reached the limit of its elasticity. Stretch marks are completely normal, but messages around them often discuss ways to remove them. Easy money for the beauty industry because they can sell you all kinds of things to lighten the appearance of stretch marks.
I was a teenager in the early 2000s and messages about dieting and being thin were loud. Celebrities gracing a tabloid magazine and having a whole article written about their weight. Teen Vogue pushing diet culture onto young girls.
This importance placed on thinness. It’s coming back around with dietary supplements being advertised so often. Ex. that one YT ad with Trisha Paytas where she’s talking about asking your pcp for Ozempic. Mind you I’m watching vids that have nothing to do with weight loss.
Were/are you or a sibling doted upon based on your looks? How did/does that impact your family dynamic?
No. I have a brother and sister that did not grow up with me. We have different mothers. From my point of view, when we were together, we were treated equally. I say from my point of view because they are older than me and may remember things differently.
Is the porn you watch, the social media accounts and celebrities you idolize a match for who you express your attraction to out loud? If not, why?
Yes. I could name some of my favorite porn stars, but just know I love Black women. I was entranced by a new creator but I have forgotten their name. It’s a simple name, but the spelling is different from normal. I was watching them in a solo scene and I believe the sun was setting at the time. As she was reaching orgasm, light shinned through the window illuminating her dark skin. Fuck. I need to find her.
As far as social media, I have done many a thirst follow and must put those days behind me.
Idolizing celebrities is a stretch. At least for me. In this moment I’m more so thinking about musical artists and actors that I enjoy listening to/seeing in movies. What is also coming up for me in this moment is the fact that Kara Young is a very fine individual. It was a pleasant surprise to see her in I Love Boosters. I liker her style, I like her artistry, and I think she is beautiful. My type is attractive and creative tbh.
What do the leaders of organizations spaces of which you have been a part of look like? Has this ever been discussed?
White. As far as discussion, I don’t think it has been addressed cause the space is fairly new. But I surely noticed the whiteness of it all. The space is also new to me. So I would like to know all the players before I assume things. Will this have to be a topic of discussion down the line if this persists? Absolutely.
Is there a disconnect between your understanding of systemic oppression and your desirability politics?
There is no disconnect, but I feel I can inquire deeper. In order to dig deeper I plan to return to Fearing The Black Body: The Racial Origins of Fat Phobia by Sabrina Strings. Fatphobia is rampant right now, and I feel it always has been. With social media we are able to see different bodies, follow folks on their fitness journeys, see who is getting plastic surgery, etc.. I bring this up because I feel social media has escalated conversations about bodies. Because we see so many bodies, and feel the need to comment on them when it’s really none of our business. (“Oh, but they put it out there.” You know you don’t have to leave a comment right? You can keep scrolling. You can still use the app and not comment.)
The best way to do these would be to finish the chapter and get straight to writing. Because the chapter is fresh in my mind, and I can expand on thoughts in the moment.
I have made it to chapter 5 so more content like this will be coming soon. I would ✨like✨ to finish this book by the end of June. I’m just taking my sweet ole time and reading in the sun.
Feel free to answer these questions on your own in the comments and I’ll see you for the next one.💕
