Media Musings: Gen V, Season 1, Episode 1

TW: Sexual Assault, Rape, Body Mutilation

I was watching Gen V (a spinoff series from the same creators of The Boys) and something came up that I haven’t heard since undergrad.

Full quote from the show:

“So we got kicked off campus in 2014 after some bitch-ass pledge died of alcohol poisoning. But, like, what Supe can’t chug 40 seltzers in an hour? But we are back, and the lineup is stacked. We got “Golf Pros and Tennis Hoes”, “CEO’s and Office Hoes”, “Cow-Bros and Indian Hoes: A Trail of Beers.” -Rufus McCurdy.

Already so much to unpack here, but a little bit of background.

(‘Supe’ is a term used in the show to describe individuals with super human abilities.)

This explanation comes from Rufus, a supe who is apart of this fraternity. A supe who has also been known to use his powers to rape Women. (In season one, upon trying to date-rape Marie (another superhuman) she blows his dick off. She has the ability to control blood and she made his penis swell, until it splattered all over the room.)

In this scene we are also shown Kevin Kohler (The Deep) who sexually assaulted Starlight. We see him as not only a member of this fraternity, but someone who held the president position in this organization for quit some time.

Now back to the quote, this lineup Rufus is talking about refers to upcoming party themes they have for the semester.

In my own experience, I noticed that these party themes were popular amongst fraternities. Fraternities that had a predominantly white membership. Fraternities that had their own homes close to campus. These parties do nothing but enforce gender roles through their harmful themes. The women who are asked to attend these parties are only seen as subservient objects. “Pimps and Hoe’s” is another theme that came up when thinking about these parties. “Dinosaurs and sluts”. As you can see titles for these parties lack imagination.

These themed parties use sexism and racism to set the tone. I mention racism because women of color who attend these parties will not experience them the same as their white counterparts. I also recall a party theme with ‘sombreros’ in the title and as you can imagine, said party….

Was just as imaginative as previous themes mentioned. Couldn’t leave you hanging like that.

And bloop! That’s the end of this post. I was caught up writing it for a bit and then fell off as you can see. Do I want to continue this? Yes.

Would you want me to dive deeper into this? That’s for you to decide.

Media plays a huge role in displaying ways we think about sex. Ways we think about gender. Ways we think about and establish hierarchy.

I was going for it, and I’m sure if I re-watch I can pick it back up. Consider this a preview of what’s to come.

Thoughts?
