September: Sexual Health Awareness Month

HI SLAYERS💕

There are SO many days/weeks/months dedicated to celebrating human sexuality. I had to do some digging, but I keep a small list. The more I learn? The more it grows.

I’m a sex educator that works with adults. I have been asked to serve as a guest speaker/educator on topics such as: BDSM, sexual pleasure, sex work, sexuality, gender, race and sexuality, and sexuality and the internet. The world of sexuality is vast and there is so much that I still don’t know. So I read. And here are a few solid reads that I would like to share with you.

The Ultimate Guide to Sex and Disability by Miriam Kaufman, Fran Odette and Cory Silverberg

I love this book. I haven’t had much education on sexuality and disability. If you’re a fellow sex educator, I highly recommend that you add this one to your resources. This book touches on sex with ourselves, communication, desire, and tantric sex. There are also resources noted within the book that can help you explore topics within said book. I enjoy that there are anecdotes from real people. Not interviews, just them discussing their experiences and sharing their thoughts.

Porn Work: Sex, Labor, and Late Capitalism by Heather Berg

I read this one for a book report that never happened. I got to do a discussion post on it though. This book gives a realistic view of what sex work is under capitalism. Specifically focusing on working conditions of those in the porn industry. We get into pay rates, other forms of income, the relationship between directors and actors, censorship, and legalities. There are also anecdotes from those who work/have worked in the porn industry.

Pussypedia: A Comprehensive Guide by Zoe Mendelson, María Conejo, and Heather Corinna

I’m currently making my way through this read, and I’m taking my time with it. Did you know that the famous Hippocrates thought the uterus wandered around the female body? I had to sit with that one for a minute. This book answers questions I have and presents new information. The makings of this book started with Pussypedia.net which provides accessible and accurate information for those with pussies. I find this book easy to read and humorous at times.

The Color of Kink: Black Women, BDSM, and Pornography by Ariane Cruz

This book helped me put together a workshop for Black Women that served as an introduction to kink. Cruz doesn’t shy away from hard topics such as *race play. Cruz further breaks down the power dynamics that appear in BDSM. There is also discussion on how this affects how Black Women participate in our sexual pleasure. We also dive into how Black Women are sometimes forced to participate in someone else’s fetishizing of them.

Getting It: A Guide to Hot, Healthy Hookups and Shame-Free Sex by Allison Moon

This book touches on slut-shaming, dirty talk, one night hookups, communicating your needs, and other aspects that come up in dating. There’s even a section that talks about drugs (alcohol, weed, etc.) and dating. From what I hear, dating is hard no matter your age, gender, or sexual orientation. This book also offers a Queer lens for a culture that has a heteronormative focus.

*Race Play – a form of BDSM that uses racist stereotypes and hierarchies of power to create a consensual form of play.

Race play is a controversial topic in the BDSM community. It’s a controversial topic in most communities. Definitely considered a taboo topic. It’s hard to talk about. I’ve written a few papers on the subject matter. It’s not something I can breakdown in a couple paragraphs.

Think you’ll be picking a few of these up? Do you have them on your shelf already? Lemme know in the comments.

If you enjoyed this and want more books, let me know that that too💕

As always, thank you for being here with me and taking the time to read my work.
